Hannah

I am a PhD student and teaching assistant at the University of Manchester in late medieval English history. I currently teach on a wide ranging module charting the beginnings of Europe from 400-1500, the history of the English Civil War and the history of Europe in 100 objects. I received a distinction for my MA in early modern history at the University of Manchester in 2013 the research of which was published in the Journal of Social History. In 2012 I received a first class honours degree from the University of Exeter in history where I covered a range of subjects from the Vikings and the fall of Rome to modern Berlin in the aftermath of World War II. I am really passionate about history and I genuinely believe the subject can be accessed by all students over a range of abilities. I am fully up to date with current trends in historiography and I’m comfortable discussing political and historical theories. In my spare time I enjoy outdoor sports such as mountain biking, hiking and running.

Tutoring Experience

I currently teach at the University of Manchester where I am a seminar leader for a number of groups in medieval and early modern history. I am also an Assistant Examiner and Moderator for Cambridge Assessment with the exam boards OCR and Cambridge International.

Tutoring Approach

Having been in the academic system for over 5 years I know the strains and pressures which can be placed on students. As part of my teaching I include a series of clear and simple exam techniques to help revise and prepare effectively so students can enter exams or submit coursework with confidence. Within my course teaching at the University of Manchester I have used a range of primary sources, from Monty Python clips to Latin letters to engage with all students and encourage lively discussions. I also focus on essay writing to ensure that tutees are able to express their ideas concisely and with a clear structure. I am happy to provide advice on University applications.
