Personal Description:
I am a pianist, composer, arranger and teacher well versed in classical music, jazz, and various popular music styles. I recently graduated from the BA Jazz (Hons) course at Leeds College of Music, where I had the opportunity to develop a wide variety of musical as well as academic and communicative skills. Being a professional performer as well as teacher, I regularly perform across the country in a variety of contexts, playing original music written by myself and others, as well as standard repertoire from the jazz and classical tradition.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a one-to-one teacher since 2009.
Tutoring Approach:
I teach a comprehensive mixture of skills, all of which are necessary for being a fluent musician - technique, sound quality, aural awareness, as well as optional theory and sight-reading. I believe in meeting the student at their own level, as opposed to the all-too-common approach used in music and other teaching of imposing the same curriculum on every student. However, I can also guide students through the grade systems (ARBSM, Trinity and Rockschool) if they wish, as well as help students with the GCSE and A-level music syllabuses. I teach mostly from my home, but can come to you as well.

I'm very happy with the lessons I've had with Matthew so far, and I am learning 2 difficult grade VIII-level pieces, along with scales, finger exercises, sight reading and music theory. I feel motivated to practise hard, and with his tuition my piano skills are returning fast. I have also started learning to improvise and play by ear, which I feel is not something I could have learnt with a classical piano teacher focused purely on leading me through my grade VIII exam.
Also, he's proven very reliable and punctual, as well as flexible over lesson times as I've needed.
