Personal Description:
Hello! I'm Bill. I am an experienced tutor with a First Class degree in Modern Languages (French & Spanish) from the University of Oxford. I’m also a qualified lawyer and have professional experience in legal French and Spanish, having begun my career with a leading international law firm. I’ve spent time working and studying in France, Spain and Cuba and am now focusing on teaching full time.
Teaching Experience:
I first began tutoring Spanish and French at GCSE and AS level in 2010. During my undergraduate degree, I spent seven months teaching English as a Foreign Language at a high school and technical college in France. This involved preparing and delivering bespoke lessons to students between the ages of 15 and 22. Helping teenagers gain the confidence to use their language skills was greatly rewarding, and I learned a great deal about enabling learners to feel comfortable when thinking and speaking in another language.
Teaching Approach:
I always begin a tutoring relationship by finding out as much as I can about the tutee's goals and approach to learning. I then plan tailored sessions to ensure these goals are met in a way that is enjoyable and beneficial.
For students preparing for exams, I will deliver sessions based around the syllabus set by your particular examination board. For beginners and casual learners, sessions will be focused on developing language skills relevant to your objectives and building the confidence to be able to use these skills in context. In my experience, these skills are best acquired and retained through a combination of worksheet, listening and spoken exercises. However, the approach taken will depend on the learner's preferences and abilities. For more advanced learners, I can provide translation-based "troubleshooting" sessions to help you eliminate recurrent errors and bad habits. These will be of particular use to university applicants required to sit entrance examinations.
