Personal Description:

A self employed professional photographer of over 32 years experience. I have worked in 7 countries and have a fully equipped studio in Birmingham.
I photograph ; education, creative and performing arts, fashion, portfolios, dance theatre, music and also produce fine art photography and have
toured 2 very successful exhibitions. One was on the road for over 3 years to 14 galleries and it's success took me to Los Angeles.
Over the past 20 years I have tutored / mentored / given talks and provided 1-1 tuition. I still have a passion for photography and always enjoy helping others
learn more about the subject.

Teaching Experience:

During the successful tour of This England, an exhibition part sponsored by Kodak, Richard was approached in 2001 by Kodak to take part in their “student days” initiative. This involved a series of half day talks in colleges and Universities around the UK, partnered with a major photographic company, such as Nikon, Polaroid, Hasselblad etc. speaking in over a dozen establishments to students; HND to Degree level on his commercial and advertising practice and on the touring exhibition.
This led to Richard being asked over the following years to do similar talks. Sandwell College recruited him on a part time basis to be a visiting lecturer, mainly working in the studio with students on lighting technique and giving further one off talks on lighting and career advice in professional photography. Following this, Richard ran a 2 day lighting workshop in partnership with Creative Alliance at The Custard Factory in Birmingham, an intensive workshop covering still life, portrait, fashion and lighting for outdoor editorial shoots. This was well received and this opened the door to some one to one tuition with up and coming photographers.
Next came “Kalaboration” a project celebrating the 2012 Olympics and the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence. This was a major visual arts initiative including theatre, spoken word , music and photography. Richard mentored and taught year 7 students in a Birmingham school for 6 weeks to produce creative photographs which were exhibited at the Midlands Arts Centre.

Over the years Richard has welcomed students from various schools to his studio and talked about his career and run photography and lighting demonstrations. Long term mentoring and work experience has taken place with students from Birmingham City University and Richard became a Career Academy mentor.
A lighting talk and workshop was undertaken to MA photography students at Birmingham City University and Richard has spoken to Wyre Forest School students at his studio. This led to talks and workshops at Malvern College and Bredon school in Gloucestershire, the latter being a day and boarding school which specializes in helping children with dyslexia, dyspraxia and a range of associated learning needs.

Richard has tutored for Red Cloud Photography Days Ltd and hosts The Learning Group at River Studio, who run photography courses.

Teaching Approach:

Photography can be a daunting subject due to the diverse nature of it… and the many technical complexities . I like to drill down to what a student wants
to understand… I like to make a shortlist initially of about 5 things… and from this I can ascertain what they "need" to know. I can then put them on the right track. There is no point me teaching catwalk fashion photography to someone who is keen to become an accomplished police forensic photographer. Once we agree on a "plan" I can implement this, working from my studio, on location or wherever works best for the job in hand. I am very accomplished with lighting… trust me… it's THE most important thing ( try taking a photograph in the dark) I also like to work in manual, and as if "shooting to film"… which equates to getting it right in camera.
