Personal Description:
I am a free-lance botanical illustrator, with 20 years experience. I work mostly for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and their associates, and specialize in pen and ink plates for publication in science journals. Before becoming self-employed, I worked at the Natural History Museum, London, as a curator and botanist.
Teaching Experience:
I take workshops and give local lessons in botanical drawing and painting, especially in certain plant families. In 2008, I gave an illustration course on Lamiaceae at Cambridge Botanic Garden. So far this year, I have given a workshop at RHS Rosemoor, and a day of teaching flower dissection at Kingston Maurward college, Dorchester.
Teaching Approach:
My approach is practical, and I like to encourage my pupils to observe and recognize what they see. As a botanist as well as an artist, I am able to explain the names and functions of the plants and show the best ways to illustrate them.
