Personal Description:
I am a classically trained actor, graduating from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama and have worked in the industry in theatre, screen and radio for 18 years. Performing using the stage name Gareth Kennerley my work is extremely high end with regular engagements in London's West End, The National Theatre and other well-known theatres in London and across the UK. I also ran my own theatre performance an training company for over 10 years mounting several professional and non-professional productions that I produced and directed myself. I have also written several stage plays. Acting and performance is my life and in meeting me my passion for it shines through.
Teaching Experience:
I have been a freelance teacher of acting, voice, accent work, presentation skills and verse for as many years as I have been a performer. I have taught workshops in schools and outreach projects and run my own training programme through my company. I also coach audition technique and build repertoire on a one to one basis with adults looking to break into the profession. I teach all grades of LAMDA exams on a 1-1 basis in Acting, public speaking and verse and prose with all students thus far attaining merits and distinctions. I also act as a mentor to people already in the profession. In terms of writing experience; as well as writing my own plays I have consulted dramaturgically on others' work in development. I am DBS checked.
Teaching Approach:
I am fun, fresh, friendly and visionary. I like a laugh but I'll also challenge my students and I'll expect commitment to the work we're doing together. I bring my wealth of current performance experience to bear whether I am teaching a beginner or a more experienced student and this applies to students of any age. I draw on several theatre practices and methodologies in my teaching, but I try to approach them in a way that is accessible and not daunting. I like to build rapport with my students and will find the best way of working with each in an organic fashion - we all find our route forward in different ways.
