Personal Description:

I am a practising visual artist, educator and curator. Based in Somerset, I create sculptural installations and mixed media artworks, alongside leading community art projects, running workshops and courses and holding residencies.

In my own practice, I exhibit extensively, work to commission and collaborate on artist-led projects. Materiality and process are central to my work. I explore and use a range of media, especially recycled materials and found objects, related to our relationship with waste, matter and ourselves. Drawing is a key element, both in 2d and 3d. At the root of my practice is the notion of interconnectedness throughout nature, line as energy, life’s cyclical persistence and transformation. Increasingly, environmental concerns about human exploitation of nature and over-consumption inform the content.

A members of Royal Society of Sculptors, I won a RSS Gilbert Bayes Award ’19. Projects include curating step in stone ‘15, site-specific artscapes in Mendip quarries and B-Wing, site-responsive work in Shepton Mallet Prison, and Inch by IN:CH, a travelling exhibition, 2021, all involving community participation.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 30 years' experience teaching in schools as both full-time and part-time art teacher, and working with the wider community. I have taught young people and adults of all abilities in colleges, museums, arts and environmental centres, homes, village halls and public parks.

In 2020, I set up a successful online sculpture course (focusing on recycled and found materials), and regularly contribute to online resources for arts organisations such as Somerset Art Works, and Art UK.

Teaching Approach:

My approach is enthusiastic, nurturing and inspiring. I believe in inclusivity and encourage individual responses, talking and learning through making. I recognise the role of art as a form of expression, communication, social actor and therapy. I am thorough, reliable, a good communicator and dedicate preparation time to ensure the best opportunities and outcomes.
