Personal Description:

Hello! I am currently a first year Life Science's student at the University of Toronto. I have completed the Gifted Program, along with several pre-AP and AP courses, including physics, biology, chemistry, math and English. I am fairly involved in extracurricular activities as well. Currently I chair a non-profit called Viability Employment Services which helps individuals with autism and developmental disabilities find gainful employment, chair an inclusion club at Trinity College, sit on the Hancock Lecture Student Advisory Committee and am a First Year Student Representative for Hart House's Social Justice Committee. In high school was an executive member of my school's Classics Club for 3 years, played the role of president of our school's HOSA chapter for 2 years and co-chair my school's Best Buddies chapter. With regards to scholarships, I was the recipient of rite C. David Naylor scholarship (valued at $20,000), distinguished as a President's Scholar, was a finalist for Western University's Faculty Entrance Scholarship (valued at $30,000), and was a semi-finalist for the Loran. I have experience working with children, having volunteered for two years in a music class for children with special needs, and providing one to one support as a camp counsellor for Autism Ontario for three past summers. Additionally, I have worked as a Youth Mentor and have facilitated a program for siblings of individuals with ASD.

Tutoring Experience:

- Privately tutored four students once or twice a week over grades 11 and 12
- Lead weekly art activities for teenagers with autism
- Lead activity and lesson on mental health to various ESL adult classes across Markham
- Taught latin vocabulary and etymology to group of students in preparation for annual conference
- Aided in teaching children with special needs social skills through music program
- Choreographed and taught dance weekly to group of 12 individuals which placed 2nd in provincial competition
- Acted as mentor for student struggling in English (as 2nd language)

Tutoring Approach:

After working with such a dynamic range of individuals, I recognize that there is no one correct approach to tutoring. My tutoring style will change to meet the distinct needs of the individual, and my lesson plans (if applicable) will serve to reflect that. For example, if a child has trouble sitting still and keeping focus, I incorporate a hands-on or kinetic activity, such as role-playing or a laboratory experiment. However, that being said, there are some prevailing strategies that serve to aid most individuals. Firstly, I try to connect course content to real-world scenarios or provide more simplistic examples to allow for easier comprehension. Additionally, I've found that fun acronyms and visual illustrations are often particularly helpful! Moreover, one of the best methods of learning is to teach. Depending on the individual and concept, I may request the student to paraphrase and teach a lesson back to me to ensure thorough understanding. I am always more than happy to make accommodations to help students thrive and succeed!
