While communication is key in any language, the focus in my teaching is primarily on students' communication skills. Nonetheless, grammar is also fine-tuned through modeling and recognizing linguistic patterns. Another important aspect of my personal philosophy is to focus primarily on “Project-Based Learning”, which is essentially learning by doing. Not only is it an effective way to backwards plan my curriculum, it is also a way to focus on the tools needed to be successful for the course, unit outcomes, and in guiding students holistically.
I have lived in Bolivia for one year as a volunteer working in a daycare as an English teacher, doing medical interpreting, and translating English to Spanish texts, papal messages, and short books. Furthermore, I have studied and interned abroad, and have done countless missionary trips where I stayed in Mexico and Bolivia for a month at a time, immersed in the language and communities. Not only was I able to find how I myself acquire Spanish and Arabic (living among an Arabic community), but I have also noted how Spanish-speaking children acquire English through experience and a Master’s Thesis.
I have both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Spanish with a minor in Arabic, and my Master’s thesis focused on how children acquire languages, studying the strategies of Krashen, Asher, and Chomsky, among others. Furthermore, I currently hold my Preliminary License to be able to teach Spanish to grades 5-12 in the state of Massachusetts, as well as my Medical Interpreting Certification.

My tutoring approach is holistic, depending wholeheartedly on my student's needs and their learning style.
If students are looking to better their communicative skills or even learn the language from the beginning, I will modify the length and level of difficulty of the input they receive to help them acquire the language at their pace.
I will recycle language and content for students as well as slowly add new words / concepts for them to acquire in their own speech.
As for grammar, I assist by teaching explicit rules to upper level students as well as through modeling rules for lower level students. The higher the language level, the more they are able to grasp the rules of linguistics. However, in the case of university students where they may be forced to learn the rules at the same time as acquisition, I will help them do both at the same time.
