Personal Description:

I am English born and raised but made the choice to move to Canada for University. As a person, I'm quite flexible; both in the way, I think people can be supported in their learning and in my day to day interactions. In Victoria, I was working as the lab manager of a research lab before making the move to Vancouver to explore new opportunities, and I truly believe that with the right approach and support, anyone can become fairly well-grounded in a subject.

Tutoring Experience:

While I have not had much experience with direct one-on-one tutoring, I have done some substantial work with larger groups. My first teaching experience was at a charity, helping to teach individuals suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries about the specifics of their injuries, and how they can adapt and respond to this change, while also explaining the basic mechanics and biology of the injury itself.

Following that I have also worked as a teaching assistant for 2 university courses at UVic, requiring me to mark exams and essays and help to decide appropriate answers to long-form exam questions. As a result of this experience, I have a strong understanding of what University professors are expecting and hoping to identify in essays and long-form writing.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style is quite holistic in that I am aiming to help you develop key tools necessary to study effectively. For example, within the sphere of Psychology developing a strong understanding of the conceptual framework of your material is a much more effective tool at preparing for exams, then merely trying to memorise key terms and ideas (although it is still important to be able to accurately recall certain bits of information). If I am doing my job properly, you will leave my sessions with a better grounding in Psychology concepts and how to evaluate the accuracy of claims made within peer-reviewed journals and articles.
