Personal Description:

I am medical student going into my third year. Before this degree, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in the Biology & Psychology specialization offered at Queen's University, which included a fourth year honours thesis in biology. I've received 5 awards (both in my school's department and national) during this time for my academic merit. I am also an avid sports and physical activity lover. I have played for my school's soccer time and ran a half-marathon a few months ago. I am also a member of my school's hiking society.

Tutoring Experience:

In my undergraduate degree, I was a peer mentor. This meant I was matched with incoming students with learning challenges or problems adjusting to university life. I was trained to assist these students in gaining independence and success in university settings. I would meet with students weekly to speak with them and offer tutoring or simply social interaction.

I was also an assistant TA at Queen's University in the department of life sciences. I helped teach important concepts in a full year anatomy course (Principles of human morphology I and II) during practical lab sessions. This is a notoriously difficult course that I excelled in.

I was also a tutor in the Queen's University faculty of Arts and Science. I tutored most science-based courses that I had previously completed.

Tutoring Approach:

First, I get a feel for the student's learning style and current knowledge. I work with the student's foundation and build knowledge from there. I am very organized with my own learning, so I tend to work with the student to set a goal for the session (and for my time with the student in general) and work towards it during each session. I love to incorporate pictures into my own studying, and if this works for students I incorporate it into my lessons. Studies show that practice questions and putting learning to the test consolidates knowledge, so I like to incorporate this as well. Also important is the ability to connect and find similarities between various concepts. In the end, each person is different when it comes to learning. I work with the students to find a way that works best for them. The ultimate outcome is that student can then teach the information to me and feel confident in what they have learned.
