Personal Description:

Hello! I am currently a Software Engineer at Ecobee having 5+ experience in software development and almost a lifetime learning about computers. I have a background in Mechanical Engineering and a Graduate Certificate in Space Studies. I have lived 2 years in Peru speaking only Spanish.

Tutoring Experience:

Currently i am a mentor for the Accelerator project, teaching underpriviledged young adults how to develop tech skills. My mentee is learning python by building a snake game.
I was a tutor at Reingold Tutoring from 2012 - 2014, teaching high school level Mathematics, Physics and Spanish

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to first find out the goals and motivation of the student. I believe in smart work vs hard work, so we learn what's most relevant to them first, then deep dive as curiosity peaks to learn more about a topic or diving into the 5 whys. Building mental models using analogies is something i like to use and have found it very effective. My approach is never to rush the student but make sure they understand the concept and not just remembering the answer. I will take as much time necessary to find a mental model or concept that works for the student so they fully grasp what is being taught. I am a fan of Barbara Oakley's teaching style in "A mind for numbers" where the brain enters 2 modes: Focused and diffused. I believe in using the diffused state to think about the concepts, come to terms with what is being taught and have asynchronous discussions to improve the students' understanding of the material.
