Reply from Peter: The evaluation confirmed the parent’s comment of the student’s slow learning in math, and upon evaluation I discovered a lack of motivation in the student. This could perhaps be caused by her feeling overwhelmed or her routine and non-interactive math work in school. It is not advised to further bombard the student with more math work of this nature, but instead designing and introducing the appropriate level of interactive math games to promote her interest in math. A quick test on the site was performed and verified the findings. When an interactive math game was given to her, she became more eager to participate, but when it was switched to math work on paper, she began to feel tired and was on the verge of falling asleep. This clearly shows her rejection to the conventional non-interactive math approach.
Arousing her interest in math will be a long process that will require lots of patience and creativity. Using the conventional tutoring approach would not be effective and may push her further away. It would not have been possible to understand her situation and learning method without a proper on-site evaluation. That is one of the reasons a 50% discount was offered.
The proposed method will be a non-conventional approach and it requires on-going communications with the parent to understand the current math unit and the student’s progress of said unit at school. Then, an appropriate level of interactive game to match her pace would be designed. In consideration of the shift in the tutoring method, and with the amount of work involved in preparation, the hourly rate would need to be readjusted.
