Personal Description:

Born and raised in California, I now live Ontario with my husband. I have been tutoring full time for about a year, but I have been an English teacher for over fifteen years. I love books and movies of multiple genres and love listening to live music, whether in a huge amphitheater or a small, intimate restaurant.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a certified secondary teacher since 2007, but I have taught since 2004. I began by taking a long-term position to help out one of my former teachers - an English teacher who was revered in my hometown. At that school I found my next teaching opportunity when a family who was looking for a homeschool teacher for their then-second grade daughter found me. I taught third grade to this girl for one year as I traveled to various countries with them throughout the year. I am proud to say that she not only went from getting average grades to exemplary grades, but also learned manners, penmanship, cultivated a love for books, and lost ten pounds of excess weight from our fitness classes. After coming home and finishing my credential and master's programs, I became employed at my alma mater high school, wherein I taught AP English Language and Composition for my tenure there. I have also taught Intro to Art History for a number of years. Throughout that time, and now, I help students with writing, their uni application essays, and critical thinking skills for reading fiction and non-fiction as well as crafting sound arguments.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always favoured the Socratic Method because I think people creating meaning for themselves more lasting that that which is told to them. For writing, I follow the "I do, you do, we do" idea of modelling and co-creating before I send them off to conquer a new skill.
