Personal Description:

Hello! My name is Mel and I'm a certified teacher in Alberta. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and then obtained a Bachelor of Education degree in Biology to become a secondary science teacher. I love teaching and I'm confident that it is my calling in life!

I love science, and I think learning about how the world works is fascinating! I also enjoy working with students of all ages, from young elementary students to high school students. Students find me enthusiastic, patient, friendly, and understanding, and I believe this helps put them at ease when they are struggling with school work.

Tutoring Experience:

-10 years of casual tutoring experience with clients in Edmonton.

-Have taught diploma and provincial achievement tests review sessions for various grades in science and biology

-Volunteer tutoring for ESL students and struggling learners

-Currently working as a substitute teacher after recently joining a major school board in the province

-Previously worked at the University of Alberta developing science programming for kids

Tutoring Approach:

I'm extremely patient and I love the challenge of trying to explain concepts in many different ways to find common ground of understanding with my students. I'm a very creative individual and I strive for creative approaches in my lessons to help students grasp concepts. I use combinations of visuals, drawings, props, demonstrations, and hands-on activities to help reinforce material, even when tutoring online! I ensure learners are able to explain and problem solve through concepts before we move on at a pace that works for them.
