Personal Description:

Hello! My name is Karis and I am an English M.A. student, currently studying at The University of British Columbia - Okanagan. I am an enthusiastic, and hardworking student. I am also employed at the university as a graduate teaching assistant and provide tutoring to first-year English students. Throughout my academic career, I have always had a passion for English whether it is poetry, Shakespeare, novels, or essays, and I love helping other students discover their own love for English (or just pass a necessary class). I graduated with first-class standing in my B.A. where I majored in English.

Tutoring Experience:

I have had experience teaching English as a second language to elementary-aged children while living abroad in Germany. I also have had the opportunity to work in developing and teaching educational programs in a variety of settings including Summer camps as well as at a Museum. More recently I've provided tutoring for elementary-aged kids, ESL students, and university students in English courses. My tutoring has ranged from basic parts of speech and grammar help to drafting thesis statements and organizing essays.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone has the ability to grow and improve, even in subjects they may find difficult. Working with students, I have learned the importance of recognizing their strong suits and their areas of improvement to create a learning environment that is most effective and enjoyable for them to be in. I think that we learn best when we can actively engage with the subject material and will work with students to not only understand the material but to also develop the long-term skills that work for them.
