Personal Description:

Hi there!

My name is Josh, I am originally from the UK but with a dual citizenship I am making the most of the chance to live in Canada.

I am offering banjo (3 finger style) and acoustic guitar lessons for beginners-intermediates. I am a young, enthusiastic and patient tutor with 3 years of private teaching experience and 5 years of experience on stage.

I play a few other instruments- too big and heavy to bring over the ocean (Electric bass, cello, violin) but guitar and banjo are my two main instruments at which I have strived to achieve a high level of proficiency.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught privately for 3 years in the UK. I have mainly taught older people that have taken up an instrument later in life but I have experience teaching young children as well as middle aged people.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been in the beginner position before and have unfortunately suffered through some very poor teachers. I have also been astoundingly lucky as to have been taught by marvelous teachers. As a consequence I feel as though I have a very good idea about what does and what does not work.

Firstly, I believe in building confidence. Some people still have bad memories of the classical approach to teaching an instrument. Music tuition is not one size fits all. I will listen to what you want to achieve and try to cater what I teach to what you want. I will always suggest the things that I have found to work for me but I am aware of how people do things differently. That's okay!

I like to teach tunes to start off with. Music is about playing music, not just scales (though they do have their place. Turst me, it can be fun!) and having something nice to play AND listen to is essential, in my opinion. Depending on where you are at I can teach theory with a practical basis- theory is too often taught as a subject removed from music; such an approach is not useful and often does not work.

For a better idea of what and how I will teach I would like to know what you would like to know. If you want to learn I want to teach you.

I can elaborate more during correspondence. If you have any questions, please ask!
