Personal Description:
I recently completed my PhD in English at Queen’s University. I also hold a Master’s in English from the University of Alberta and a Double Honours Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of Saskatchewan.
I love studying literature and languages, and I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with students. One of my favorite things about teaching is seeing students develop their own interests, passions, and excitement for learning.
Tutoring Experience:
During my PhD I taught at Queen’s University for five years. As a teaching assistant for first year English courses, I taught tutorials of 30 students and worked with students individually on literature comprehension, analysis, and essay writing skills.
I also received a Teaching Fellowship at Queen’s where I created and taught a second year course on literature and the environment. I planned and developed the course syllabus, readings, assignments, and exams. I mentored teaching assistants, lectured, and met with students individually.
My experience as a teacher has been at the University level, so I am well equipped to tutor senior high school, college, and university students. However, I am comfortable working with students of all ages and skill levels. For example, I am qualified and would be pleased to help students with beginners’ French, introducing them to grammar and vocabulary, reading, writing, and speaking French.
Tutoring Approach:
Having taught large classes as well as worked with students individually, my teaching approach is very flexible. At Queen’s University, I taught students from a wide variety of backgrounds and skill levels. From this experience, I learned how to assess and respond to students’ particular strengths and their areas for improvement.
My approach to teaching and tutoring essay writing skills emphasizes process: brainstorming ideas, developing an argument and outline, writing, editing, and revising. This step-by-step approach helps students to set achievable goals for each stage of the writing process, and it helps them to develop effective time management skills.
Through discussion and an interactive approach, I help students enhance and apply their skills and knowledge, develop important critical thinking skills, and build confidence in their own mastery of the subject matter.
