Personal Description:
Hi there! My name is Émilie and I'm from Montreal. I've always been passionate about social issues and education, and I strive to build meaningful relationships in a world in which many feel a lack of connection. I am a true believer in the power of kindness and generosity, and strive to make a valuable contribution to this world. Other passions of mine include outdoor activities (hiking, biking, skating!) and dancing.
Tutoring Experience:
Five years ago, I began tutoring college students in History as well as Economics. Having loved this experience, I started teaching college students on the topic of sustainability in an effort to spread awareness on ways to reduce our impact on the planet. I also gained more teaching experience by facilitating anti-homophobia workshops in high schools through a community organization. Additionally, after taking the initiative to create a leadership program for girls at a camp, I was hired to innovate and facilitate workshops promoting social awareness in children. I talked to children about gender, economic, and racial inequality. I aimed to make the campers think about their prejudices and actions, and how they had the potential to be powerful agents of change. I also worked as the coordinator of a small organization aiming to increase literacy in adult education centres. I also worked as a TA for two undergraduate Sociology class at Ryerson University.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe creating a connection with the student is important, as I've found students have more willingness to learn if there is a foundation of trust. Students feel more comfortable asking questions and being honest about not understanding subject matter if they feel comfortable with their tutor. I also like asking students which way they believe they integrate knowledge best, as I believe they should be in control of their education. If they aren't sure what kind of learner they are, I like to try different approches until we find one that fits.
I also believe that in order to excel in a subject matter, having a strong base is essential. When tutoring students, I pay attention to whether they have a strong grasp on the fundamentals of the subject matter. I make sure to cover the basics well, and then help them build more expertise in the subject by relating back to the basics.
*Students can travel to me near me to Mont-Royal station or I can travel to them for a 10$ travel fee if their home is at a distance of 30 minutes or less. For homes that are at a distance of 30 minutes or more, the travel fee is increased.
