Personal Description:

I will be starting Medical Sciences at Western University in September and plan to get a double major in Medical Sciences and Philosophy. The most important thing you should know about me is that I have a ton of respect for others and laugh a lot. I can be shy at times but once I start talking, I can’t seem to stop. I enjoy bread making, poetry, dancing, learning languages and playing my guitar. Something interesting that you might like to know about me is that I tend to ask a bunch of questions. My classmates know me as that crazy girl that goes to every help session at lunch and that never seems to be satisfied with a simple answer. I used to be utterly terrified of approaching my teachers for help but with time, I was able to gain the confidence I needed to become determined to learn. From my own experience, I know that you don't need to be naturally smart to do well in school and enjoy learning. I might have an impressive average, but it isn’t because I was born a genius. It’s because I let people help me when I need it. It’s because I don’t see my confusion as a weakness and I’m willing to be that unashamed student that asks a billion questions. It’s because I don’t let myself believe I understand something when it is clear that I don’t. I love asking questions for many reasons but the biggest reason I do it is because I believe that the more we question, the better answers we get.

Tutoring Experience:

People always come to me for help when they don’t “get” something. Before big tests, I get texts at 1 A.M. from my friends asking me for “last minute help.” I decided to start tutoring because I realized that I loved explaining things to people. I hated it when teachers left gaps in my learning and so it felt so good to be able to help others not only find their gaps, but fill them. I’ve always loved organizing small study groups at school where students can reciprocally help each other out and, I guess, that’s why I love tutoring. It’s something reciprocal - everytime I answer a question, I understand the content better and improve as a tutor. In terms of experience, I tutored a few students at my high school and helped them with test preparation, remediation and coaching. I also have two younger siblings that I regularly give guidance to. Although I might not have as much experience as somebody else, I have passion and a strong sense of humor. I am dedicated to searching for new and innovative ways of making content more interesting for students and I PROMISE that I will invest in your learning as much as I invested in mine. I’m not someone who easily gives up so believe me when I say that I won’t ever give up on your learning. It’s something I will greatly value and prioritize and so I won’t ever stop thinking of new ways to help you because I'm a type of person who cares too much.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring will be different with every student I have. I need to uncover your learning style so that I can present information in a way that has the greatest effect on YOU. Something I believe very strongly is that what we learn with pleasure, we never forget and so I intend to first develop a relationship with you before I decide what I will do. That said, no matter who I end up tutoring, I promise that I will be honest, be patient and be a good listener. I know that what is obvious or easy for me may not be so for you, and so I will learn to pick up on your cues and help you more effectively. I will never dominate the conversation and I will share my own experiences when they are needed. All that said, of course, my ultimate goal will be to help you become an independent learner and understand that perfect learners don’t exist. I will use all of my resources to make sure you not only get better marks, but actually enjoy what you are learning. I will teach you using a combination of notes and diagrams as well as videos I think might be needed. As a tutor, I will make it my mission to turn you into a mini me. That is, someone who loves asking questions. I don’t want you to ever get stuck or feel hopeless - I want you to feel comfortable asking me questions whenever you need so that you never fall down the scary rabbit hole of confusion.

“It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settling a question without debating it.” – Joseph Joubert
