Information About Christopher

Nanton tutor

Personal Description:

I have recently completed my Education Degree from the University of Lethbridge with a major in English Language Arts Education and a minor in Social Studies/History Education.

I have a passion for literature, reading and the English language, as well as the dramatic arts, theatre and history.

I volunteer with ESL tutoring groups, K-12 language arts tutoring, spelling bee mentoring and founded a literacy outreach program.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored for over four years and have experience working with students from ages 8 - 65. I have taught English as a Second Language at a reputable ESL school in Calgary, Alberta named Maple Leaf Academy. I also have classroom teaching experience in grades 4, 8, 9, 10, and 11. I am certified to teach Grades K through 12.

I have tutored all grades in English Language Arts. I run literary analysis circles at the University of Lethbridge and have also tutored university students in literary studies.

I am an editor and a grammar specialist. I have run workshops ranging from the art of storytelling and folklore, to writing an effective, persuasive essay.

I have coached acting and founded a STAMINA theatre program that focuses on building student confidence in both middle and high school.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it's important to be matched with the right teacher when it comes to one-on-one tutoring. My goal is to be honest with my students and to clearly communicate whether I can offer the help that the student needs. I believe in making the content easy to approach and interesting but I am only willing to tutor students who are serious about getting help.

Teaching is central to my life and I take my profession seriously but I am also laid back and open to employing multiple approaches to meet the needs of my students. Humour and feedback are the two pillars I use in my sessions to provide students with an effective, yet memorable learning experience.
