Information About Andrew

Thunder Bay tutor

Personal Description:

Thinking back, I have always had a hand in teaching and mentoring. During High School, I was a band geek, and eventually took leadership roles within my high school bands and spent time outside school as a "practice buddy" and accompanist for other students of my piano teacher. I was also involved with martial arts and, twice every week, I would also appear two hours early to my karate class to help my sensei supervise and teach the kid’s class.

Though I love music, I've also been extremely curious about the natural world, so I decided to pursue a science degree after high school. While at University, I began volunteering as a tutor with the Children’s Aid Society of Thunder Bay, helping at-risk children and youth deal with the stresses of school. I also spent a year serving on the board of directors of the Thunder Bay Literacy Group, a non-profit organization that offers free education and upgrading to the city’s adult population.

Despite a love of music, and a passion for science, my experiences taught me that my fulfillment over the years has mostly come from teaching. So, I decided to pursue my Ontario teaching qualifications, and am currently one year into a two-year Bachelor of Education. By May 2022, I will be licensed to teach grades 7 - 12 in Ontario.

Outside school/work, I still play the piano every day, and my dog and I love hiking and fishing.

- Volunteer Tutor - Children's Aid Society of Thunder Bay (2014 - present)

Tutoring Approach:

I believe students learn best through experience - more specifically, they learn best by trying, making mistakes, and trying again. Therefore, I feel it’s important to create an environment that is challenging, but also safe at the same time. Students need to feel challenged in order to learn and grow; however, the consequences of failing or making mistakes shouldn’t be so great that it discourages students to try. It is therefore important to create an environment that feels safe.

In order to create a safe environment such as this, I think it’s crucial to practice empathy and flexibility. It’s important to facilita**Contact Detail Removed**arning that accommodates different learning needs and ways of thinking. In a one-on-one tutoring situation, I think it's important to allow the student to set their own goals and pace of instruction.
