Personal Description:

Hello! Bonjour ! Zdravo! Olá! It is a pleasure to e-meet you.

I will be entering my third year of undergraduate studies this upcoming September at Glendon College, the bilingual college of York University. I am pursuing a double major in French Studies and Canadian Studies, alongside a Certificate in Portuguese Proficiency and a Bachelor of Education in French. I plan to graduate with my undergraduate degrees in 2024, and then pursue a Masters and hopefully a PhD in the future. I aspire to dedicate my career to teaching French and working for the Canadian government. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate program in 2018 and have received many awards since then, most recently the "Emerging Leader Award" for my outstanding contributions to the Glendon community.

I am passionate about evoking progressive societal change through volunteerism efforts and community engagement. You can find me either reading, cooking or watching the news during my spare time.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring students for about three years now, mainly in language acquisition.

During my last year of secondary school, I tutored academic and IB students who were struggling with acquiring a firm and confident grasp of the French language. I assisted them in completing their homework and I would often create a diverse range of exercise questions in order for them to practice with.

I have been an active volunteer with Peace by Peace at Glendon for two years now. This is a non-profit organization that trains university students to teach an 11-week curriculum based on conflict-resolution and community-building to Grades 4-6 students in the Toronto and Peel regions. During my first year of university, I taught a Grade 2 classroom in English, and this year I taught a Grade 5 classroom in French. The curriculum that I taught touches upon, but is not exclusive to, the following elements: the difference between empathy and sympathy, how to effectively approach bullying, the danger of stereotypes and more.

In the summer of 2018, I participated in the Explore program, a national language immersion program, where I resided with a wonderful Québécois host family for one month in Trois-Pistoles, Québec. I took two intense French courses in the morning, and engaged in cultural activities to heighten my knowledge of Québécois history and politics during the day and into the evening. Since I was enrolled in two upper-year courses, I decided to dedicate many of my afternoons to teaching French beginners the basics of the French language. I was grateful to meet a diverse group of Canadians aspiring to learn French, and it was remarkable for me to be able to note their impressive progression during our short time spent together.

I tutored English, French and Math to a few students in the past during my time as a tutor for TutorBright. A highlight of my tutoring experience was when I tutored English to a relatively new Chinese immigrant.

I am happy to assume the role of a peer mentor to first-year undergraduate students at Glendon this year.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is a two-way street in that both the tutor and student are responsible for giving it their all during their time spent together. Tutoring should be enjoyable and enriching for both the student and their tutor.

I aim to eradicate most instances of social and professional hierarchy between the student and myself as the existence of many power dynamics tends to make students feel uncomfortable and less of an equal. It is my role to create a caring and inclusive environment where my students feel encouraged to excel in the knowledge acquisition of their academic discipline. My ultimate goal is to know that my students leave our tutoring sessions feeling confident and enlightened with what they learned during our time together. I hope to encourage my students to pursue various forms of knowledge, and to use it in their everyday lives; I seek to aspire my students to become life-long learners and acquire a passion for education.

Aside from being their tutor, I would hope to foster a relationship based on mentoring and friendship.
