Personal Description:

Hi! I'm Alyssa and I am a certified Ontario teacher. I graduated from the Master of Teaching program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto in June 2018. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2016 with a specialist in Psychology and a minor in English. I have experience working with both elementary and high school students, however I am currently certifified to teach grades 7-12.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored several students in both elementary and high school. While I have tutored in other subjects such as math, most of my tutoring experience has been for English. Over the past three school years I have taught English at the high school level in four positions, Social Science in one position, and also have experience preparing students for the Grade 10 literacy test (OSSLT).

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked with students who display a wide range of capabilities and so I tailor my teaching style to best meet their needs. I always keep an ongoing conversation with parents and students about areas of strength and weakness so I can decide how to approach a certain task or improve a skill in a way that works for the student. I realize that essays and other writing assignments, as well as reading, can be intimidating for some students, and so I tend to break down information/tasks into more manageable pieces. Lastly, I always encourage students to speak with their teachers regarding areas of improvement and feedback, so that I am better able to assist them. Tutoring is very rewarding and I am fortunate to have had very positive experiences thus far and I am looking forward to many more.
