HI! I am a friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging young(ish!) piano teacher who has recently relocated to Taunton from Brighton
In Brighton I built up an established and successful private piano teaching practise over ten years. Eventually I was gaining more students than I had the time to take on, mostly following recommendations from existing students. This is the place to promote yourself, so I will add that I was a very popular teacher, and I have been informed by past students and parents of past students that I was very difficult and sometimes, sadly impossible (apparently!) to replace. I really like teaching well, and I take a great care and passion for my teaching. I believe music is one of the most important things in life, offering a release from the stresses of clinical nature of much of modern life and has so much to teach people. I try and pass on that enthusiasm I have to all my students.
I have a vast amount of teaching experience, teaching all ages and abilities. I have taught all grades from i right through to VIII, across a variety of examination boards including, ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and Rockschool. I teach Jazz to an advanced level using particular methodologies that certainly do not come from traditional scale theory. Having transcribed many recordings I have a really good understanding of Jazz and how it works. I typically adopt a combination of blues licks and Barry Harris methods for teaching jazz. Some students even just like to concentrate on boogie woogie or blues (usually after they hear me play it). It is a great motivator to encourage students to keep playing, particularly if they are on the third month of playing one of the pieces from the ABRSM grades, which one can certainty grow to be not so fond of!
I take a highly individualised approach to each student. Every student is totally unique and comes with a unique set of motivations, skills and weaknesses. I am fascinated by the art and science of teaching piano and strive to find the best method of progression for any given student, that will help them stay motivated and loving what they are doing.
I actually really enjoy teaching the little ones, I see it as a blank canvas on which you can create a lifetime of good habits, particularly with regards to reading and technique.
However, if you don't want to learn formally, or are more interested in Jazz. I absolutely love teaching Jazz which has a whole world behind it. As I go on, I learn more and more and think i can save people starting out in Jazz countless hours of study with the methods I use.
