Information About Mairi - St. Andrews teacher

Personal Description:

I am a music student at the University of St Andrews, with a strong passion for the piano. In 2017, I received a scholarship from the North East of Scotland Music School, passing ABRSM grade 8 with distinction the next year. Since then I have accompanied the Haddo Children’s Voices, toured with the Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra and been involved in many musical events at Ellon Academy. Over lockdown, my regular performances were replaced by songwriting and composing for online productions, but what I missed most was playing music with other people - nothing beats a good ceilidh set!

Tutoring Experience:

Teaching beginners since 2018, my experience started with primary aged children at my home in Balmedie. In the last year my teaching has expanded to include young adults and fellow students in St Andrews, all playing at a range of levels.

Tutoring Approach:

My goal through piano tutoring is to pass on my love for the piano to everyone who wishes to learn to play. I am open to individuals’ preference of learning styles (lessons should always be fun!) but I do encourage a balance of basic theory, reading from sheet music, and playing by ear - as these are all skills I have found hugely beneficial as classical and jazz performer.
