This is how 2 referees rated Lucy:
Lucy (b. 1997) is an undergraduate student at the Royal College of Music, studying the flute with Sue Thomas and head of woodwind, Simon Channing. Since starting at the college, Lucy has been chosen to perform in a masterclass with Petri Alenko as well as to Sir James Galway with her wind quintet; Prince Consort Winds. She has also performed frequently with the RCM Philharmonic, working with conductors including Martin Brabbins and Peter Stark, and recently led the Wind Orchestra conducted by Jamie Phillips.
Previously, Lucy was a student at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester for 9 years, where she studied with Helen and Jonathan Rimmer. During her time at the Junior RNCM, Lucy achieved her Grade 8 distinction in November 2009 and her ABRSM Performance Diploma in July 2016. In 2014, Lucy was made principle flute of the JRNCM symphony orchestra, winning the Anthony Ridley Prize for Orchestral Playing, and was awarded the Friends of the JRNCM Ensemble Prize the following year with her flute, viola and harp trio. In October 2015, Lucy was invited to perform a solo recital in the RNCM Concert Hall and represented the junior department in several external concerts. In June 2016 she was awarded the John Ellis Memorial Prize by the director.
As an orchestral player, Lucy was the principal flautist of the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain for three years, and has also held the position of principle flute in the National Children’s Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
As a soloist, Lucy has participated in masterclasses with leading flautists including William Bennett and Robert Winn, and in May 2016 was selected to play to Sir James Galway at Birmingham Conservatoire in his UK residency. From this, Lucy was invited to attend the Galway Flute Festival in Weggis, Switzerland, in July of this year. In April 2016, Lucy won the Chetham’s Flute Festival Advanced Competition, winning the opportunity to perform the Mike Mower Flute Concerto with the Chetham’s Wind Ensemble and work alongside the composer himself.
As a keen chamber musician, Lucy is a founding member of Prince Consort Winds; a wind quintet made up of fellow second year students at the Royal College of Music.
I have lots of experience working with young pupils. As part of the RCM professional portfolio teaching module, we learnt about all aspects of instrumental teaching and also went into primary schools to give group workshops. Additionally, since moving to London I have begun teaching one-on-one lessons and have developed a great passion for teaching.
As a student myself, I am constantly learning and improving my teaching technique; inspired by some of the UKs finest musicians. I believe teaching should be fun and interesting so that children not only feel inspired to continue learning, but also enjoy their lessons.
