Personal Description:
I am a classical pianist, accordionist and instrumental teacher based in Leeds. Originally coming from rural Somerset, I first showed an interest in music at the age of six when I took up the piano Accordion. I also began taking piano lessons at the age of twelve and from there I quickly progressed through the ABRSM grade system. Throughout my early years as a musician I took part in performances on both of my main two instruments regularly.
In 2010 I entered Leeds College of music on a scholarship, studying Classical piano. During my time at the college I have worked in various ensembles playing a mixture of music ranging from the Baroque era right up to late twentieth Century music.
I have gone on to complete a masters in music composition at LCoM and have spent my last few years composing and researching contemporary classical music.
Tutoring Experience:
As a tutor I have had a number of piano and accordion students of a variety of ages and abilities.
As a performer I began playing at festivals and competitions at a young age . I have gone on to perform professionally both as a soloist and an ensemble player at events across the UK.
I also work as an accompanist for a community choir playing at regular rehearsals and performances.
Tutoring Approach:
I am flexible with my teaching style according to what the student is looking to get out of having lessons. My aim is to teach students to teach themselves because that is the key to successful practice between lessons. I achieve this through thoughtful development of technique and general musical understanding.
I encourage students to develop their musical ear through improvising and aural training. I feel it is important for students to have a good understanding of the historical background of the repertoire that they are learning and can recommend listening to help with this.
