Tutoring Experience:

I have been playing guitar for 42 years and teaching for 26 years on a one to one basis.

Tutoring Approach:

APPROACH TO TEACHING

I coach students through grades, resulting mostly in distinctions and merits so I must be doing something right. None grade students are offered the same important ground work but tailored to their individual aspirations.
For example, what use is the minor pentatonic scale to a 14 year old girl who doesn’t want to do grades and just wants to strum Taylor Swift songs?

No teacher is right for all pupils and there is no one and only way to teach! If I’m not the right teacher for a pupil, I will tell them.
There are so many different styles and techniques in music and on the guitar, nobody can do it all no matter how many qualifications they may have.

It all depends on the individual, the level they are already at, what they would like to do and most importantly their attitude and dedication towards practice! I insist on a chat to new starters (or in the case of children, to their parents) to explain the reality of how it works.

At the end of each lesson I log down what we covered, I check that they understand it and what they have to practice. I don’t expect miracles but if I give a new beginner three chords I would expect them to know at least one of them off by heart for the next lesson, otherwise how can I give them anymore?

It has to come from the individual. I can’t memorise theory or practice chords and scales for them, I can only show them what I know they need to know and check that they understand it. A teacher is a guide. Great musicians are made of hard work!!
