Personal Description:

I am a highly experienced musician, married to an artist, who finds, after leaving full-time academic teaching, the time to explore my first love of teaching the piano one-to-one. I aim to enable confident, articulate performers at every level and to establish the skills to provide life-long enjoyment and self-expression through a hugely varied and exciting repertoire.

I studied for five years at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, winning the Chadwick Cup for Bach Performance, and performed as soloist and accompanist for several years prior to taking up teaching.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 40 years' experience of teaching the piano in leading independent schools (Wycombe Abbey, Downe House, Wispers School) in addition to GCSE & A level Music and Grade 5 Theory and above, putting on annual musical productions and directing choirs as well as working in pastoral care.
I have always taught privately as well as in full-time education, with pupils from age 8 upwards and from beginner to diploma level.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to enable pupils to play any music they wish to in the future, with secure sight-reading skills, via a curriculum of classical music and by establishing sound, fluent technical skills and interpretative depth and understanding. All pupils are encouraged to find their own voice and to play beautifully. I want my pupils to become confident, articulate performers at every level and I set out to establish the skills to provide life-long, life-enhancing enjoyment and self-expression through a hugely varied and exciting repertoire. I teach by encouragement, clear explanation and demonstration. I also apply a holistic approach, teaching about form, style, history and musical devices to nurture an all-round understanding of music as well as technique and musicianship.
