Personal Description:
I am an experienced piano teacher and performer with degrees in music from Glasgow University (BMus and MMus). I offer friendly, tailored lessons for all ages and stages - whether you're a complete beginner, returning to the piano after a break, or preparing for exams.
My teaching is shaped by a broad musical background. While I specialised in composition during my studies, I also trained extensively in piano performance, both as a soloist and accompanist. I've performed in many contexts - from classical recitals, weddings, funerals and church services to ceilidhs, musical theatre performances, and gigs with local bands.
Alongside teaching, I’m a lifelong learner. I draw on a wide range of educational experiences - including TEFL and CELTA qualifications, theology modules, Mandarin study, and accordion lessons - which help me bring fresh approaches to each student’s learning journey.
Tutoring Experience:
I’ve taught piano since 2010 to students of diverse backgrounds, life stages and levels (complete beginner to Grade 8). This has sometimes included preparing students for ABRSM exams (when students have requested this) and has always involved seeking to find repertoire that the students will enjoy playing.
My teaching is also shaped by four years of teaching English and academic skills at Nankai University, in Tianjin, China, and years of mentoring university students from diverse backgrounds. These experiences have deepened my ability to communicate clearly, adapt to individual learning styles, and support students in reaching their goals.
Tutoring Approach:
I aim to make lessons enjoyable and inspiring - whether that involves classical repertoire, pop songs, improvisation, theory, or original composition. I want students to feel encouraged, challenged, and connected to the music they’re playing.
Whether you're hoping to take exams, play your favourite tunes, or deepen your musical skills, I’d love to help you get there. Additionally, I'm always enthusiastic about sharing my own love of music with students and gladly recommend concerts and other opportunities to attend to bring music to life.

He has found a key to my son's music heart and is inspiring him to develop his own style since.
Sam always looks for building the skills on the pupil's interests. He cooperates with the parent, on the best approach for the child.
Sam is very patient and flexible, shaping the lesson material in a way to keep my son engaged.
The best description of Sam's quality as the piano tutor is perhaps the reaction of my son after receiving the first lesson. He was mad at us for the idea of changing his tutor, but right after his first lesson, my son called his mum to thank her sincerely for finding Sam.
It only got better from there …
