Personal Description:

I am a professional musician specialising in flute clarinet and saxophone.

As well as teaching full time I play in a number of orchestras and work as a free-lance musician for orchestras, big bands and blues bands and musical theatre and for weddings and functions.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching as woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon & recorders) instrumental teacher in schools (independent and local authority) full-time since 1990 and running a busy private teaching practice (teaching woodwinds, piano, classical guitar and violin/viola, theory, and composition + performance skills) since 1989.

I was one of the first to offer Jazz Saxophone/Clarinet/Flute as a subject in response to Guildhall's (and later ABRSM and Trinity) new Jazz syllabus in the 1990s.

Many of my students have gone on to study music at University and music college and have become professional musicians and teachers themselves.

Previous pupils include Trinity College London high scorers.

Tutoring Approach:

People want to learn music for very different reasons, whether it is to aim for a music career, to pass exams or for pleasure.

I aim to teach a pupil what they want to learn or guide them through the exam systems using repertoire and teaching/learning styles that are relevant to their individual needs and preferences. No two students are the same and I try to reflect that in my teaching.

I often produce my own materials to meet their needs, especially in the early stages of learning a musical instrument.

Above all, I believe that music should be taught musically and I strive to inspire my students rather than merely to instruct them.
