Personal Description:

My name is Robin and I have been playing fretted instruments including the mandolin, tenor banjo and Irish bouzouki for the last 20 years.

I currently work as a full-time musician in the The Trials of Cato, where I alternate between various instruments. I also sing and contribute songs for the band. We were recently described as 'one of the real discoveries on the folk circuit in recent times' by BBC 2's Mark Radcliffe and our debut release won 'Best Album' at the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

I offer instruction in various styles including Celtic, bluegrass, blues, country, klezmer and Balkan music. If you would like to listen and get a feel for the type of music I play, please check out the following links:

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching music lessons privately for 5 years, and I also have extensive experience of other forms of learning and teaching which informs my attitude towards music tuition.

I have worked as a private academic tutor for many years in the UK, advising students on applications to university and the construction of personal statements and interview technique for Oxford and Cambridge universities.

I also worked as a full time teacher in an English language school in Beirut, Lebanon from 2014 - 2016. This period equipped me with some fundamental teaching skills including patience, enthusiasm and the ability to build rapport with students and inspire in them a desire for learning.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach towards tuition is primarily focused on the personal goals and aims of the student and, most importantly, their enjoyment of playing music. I don't believe that learning a musical instrument should be an exercise in torture, but rather an exciting journey which equips you with the tools to play the music you want to play!

So, if you want to learn how to play Irish jigs and reels for your local session, that's what we will focus on. If you want to learn chords, rhythms and picking patterns to accompany yourself while singing your favourite folk songs, that's what we'll do. Or if you just want to learn how to play but have no idea of what direction to take, we can figure that out together whilst learning the fundamental skills you need to express yourself on your chosen instrument.

I am not a purist and I believe that music is one of the greatest pleasures in life - let's keep it fun and enjoy the journey together!
