Personal Description:
I am a passionate musician, I play several instruments - bagpipes, guitar, saxophone, and a selection of others that I have learned for the purposes of writing and recording my own music. I currently operate as a professional musician for hire at various events and am in a couple of bands.
I have my own recording studio where I've produced my own albums and where I can provide music and music production tuition.
In addition, I am currently studying my second degree - a distance learning degree with the notable Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I'm learning a variety of topics ranging from music theory to music production and business. I am also working through my ABRSM certification, having reached Grade 5 in music theory.
Tutoring Experience:
My primary source of teaching experience is from my time working with the University of St Andrews, where as a part of my job role I provided monthly training workshops to large groups on the subject of writing for the web, and various web usability topics.
In addition I also ran a weekly "clinic" whereby web editors across the University could come to receive 1-1 training on various web techniques. I also provided 1-1 training on the use of the website's content management system.
I lectured in Digital Multimedia on the Activity Tourism degree programme at Scotland's Rural College, and have worked for several years now as a private music and academic tutor.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to music tuition is to identify what the student wants to do. I find that musicians are more motivated when they can see the benefit of their learning for themselves, rather than being pushed or railroaded into anything. Such was my experience at school.
Music tuition with me can be as technical or as artistic as the student wishes. I always prefer to take a more practical approach and play by feel to explore expression, but I will work with the student to whatever they are comfortable with.
Moreover, I try and equip my students with all the knowledge they require to develop their craft without my involvement. Musicians can learn more and flourish once they have the confidence and the foundational skills required, and is where the "real" learning takes place.
There is no ego or competition with me. I will share all my knowledge and experience with all my students and offer insight into everything I possibly can.
