Personal Description:

I am currently working as a trombonist in the British Army and based in London. I have over 20 years' experience playing in various ensembles and genres both within and outwith the Army and I feel I can bring this experience to my lessons to help students progress well.

Tutoring Experience:

My instrumental teaching experience is limited having had only one formal student previously. However, I have coached novice players in a junior brass band and I occasionally coach junior colleagues at work. Despite my lack of instrumental teaching experience, I do have experience in teaching on a more academic level. Before joining the Army I worked in healthcare. Part of my duties was to mentor/tutor new and established staff members as well as student nurses and doctors rotating into the department. I have also given tutorials to classes of around 12-15 university students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very friendly and approachable and although some students may feel intimidated by the thought of being taught by someone in the military, I feel I can pass on some discipline, committment and determination, which have been instilled in me by the military, during my lessons. These qualities are definitely required in order to progress with a musical instrument. I also believe students need lots of encouragement in order to succeed as i am sure there will be times when students will feel put off by difficulty in technique or the written music. My job is to help them overcome these difficulties as best I can. Finally, learning and playing a musical instrument is fun and I like to make my lessons fun and interesting.
