Personal Description:

My name is Nina and I am an experienced professional violinist and teacher based in Stroud. I have 8 years of experience of teaching violin, viola, and chamber music, and completed the Royal Academy's teaching course (LRAM) this year. As a performer I work with various ensembles locally and across the country, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Bristol Ensemble, and Hurn Court Opera. My specialisms include Baroque and contemporary classical music, but I have worked with all kinds of music from Classical to pop to film scores!

Tutoring Experience:

2013 - present: One-to-one tuition - all levels from beginner to expert, ages 4 - adult
Teaching positions at:
Gloucestershire Academy of Music
Cambridge Music Consortium, Cambridge, MA, USA
Boston Youth Symphony, Boston, MA, USA
Community Music Center of Boston, MA, USA
musiConnects, Boston, MA, USA

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in highly personalised violin lessons that teach the whole student. Learning music is as much about learning life skills as it is about ability to play an instrument! To that end I employ techniques from conventional pedagogy and the Suzuki method to teach listening and ear training skills, technique, chamber music skills, and music theory to all students in the way that suits them best. If it is right for the student I am happy to prepare them for ABRSM or other exams. I teach patience, focus, and attention to detail, and I am also very aware of the physical challenges of an instrument like the violin and work on injury prevention techniques from the beginning. I have some experience teaching students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities and am happy to work with parents and students to overcome any challenges the student might have - in my experience these things are not a drawback!

I also teach adults - whether or not you have ever played the violin before!
