Personal Description:

I am an experienced mandolinist and multi-instrumentalist with an eclectic musical background. I studied mandolin and guitar at Newcastle University for four years, graduating with First Class Honours and have spent over ten years working as a full time musician teaching and touring the UK and Europe.

I currently perform with The Shackleton Trio, bluegrass and old time duo Clark & Zuppardi, bluegrass group Cobbler Bob and and am one of the Two Nicks with melodeon player Nick Wiseman-Ellis. I have also performed alongside BBC Folk Award nominees Dan Walsh and Ciaran Algar in the Dan Walsh Trio.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over a decade of experience teaching mandolin, banjo, guitar and ukulele to individuals and groups in a variety of settings. Alongside years of experience delivering one to one lessons I have also led workshops at festivals including Folk East, Towersey Folk Festival, Broadstairs Folk Week, Steeplemorden Bluegrass Festival, Uppsala University and St Andrews Music Festival.

Tutoring Approach:

I love teaching the mandolin and sharing my enthusiasm for the instrument! Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned player I always enjoy helping my students discover their own musicality in a way that is intuitive and adaptable to whatever your skill level from beginner to advanced. I welcome students looking for regularly structured lessons as well as casual learners wanting to occasionally check in on their playing.

In my teaching I focus on tune playing, accompaniment and all aspects of technique, with an emphasis on helping students understand the rudiments of the mandolin and training a students' musical ear and ability to understand what they hear and how it translates to the instrument. I strive to teach by ear as much as possible, but also provide sheet music and tablature, as well as bespoke videos for online students with comprehensive follow up notes tracking your progress.
