Personal Description:

I am an experienced practising guitarist of 25 years, and I am passionate about passing on my knowledge to the guitarists of the future.

I've been in many bands over the years. I currently gig regularly with Hillbily Creek, a hot country and rock 'n' roll band, and Señor Tina, an acoustic duo. I am proficient in several styles across acoustic and electric guitar. I've played gigs at all levels, from festival stages to small open mic nights. My previous band, Ten Degrees Of Pitch, released an EP which is available on Spotify. I have numerous demonstration and teaching videos on YouTube.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching for over five year. I have a distinction in Grade 7 guitar from Trinity College.

Tutoring Approach:

I can encourage absolute beginners to form their first chord shapes; intermediate students to break out beyond root chords and basic pentatonics; and more advanced players to achieve the highest of grades in exams. School-age students can benefit from UCAS points at grade 6 and above - a tangible benefit for parents that the guitar can actually help further a child's career!

I personally regularly perform live, whether as part of a band or as a solo artist. I endeavour to help students reach a level such that they are able to perform live too. That of course means control of the instrument, but also increasing confidence levels, controlling nerves, and giving an enjoyable presentation, all skills which serve a student well throughout their life.

While music theory is important, the guitar is a practical instrument so I tend to work on songs and pieces first, and derive theory the music, rather than the other way around, in order to keep students' attention and ensure lessons are always engaging and fresh.

I am also experienced in music tech and production. I have a great interest in live looping using synths and drum machines with the guitar, which can be an powerful combination for a solo artist who wishes to create a full sound all by themselves.

I also can advise on singing techniques and how to sing and play at the same time, an essential part of being a well-rounded musician, and also a gateway in to songwriting and performing one's own material, which is the key to making money and a well-rounded career in music.
