Personal Description:

I have been playing, performing and recording as an active drummer since 1989. I have undertaken work as a freelance artist, playing many styles over the years including: Musicals, world music ensembles, blues, funk, jazz, fusion, rock and pop. I have been involved as a performing / recording artist during this time in original bands, cover bands and residencies. I have played at Festivals (V2), Music venues (The Hacienda, Mcr. Academy), Theatres (Leeds Grand Theatre) Weddings and other corporate occasions to name but a very few. I teach from home or commute depending on your preferences. I read and write drum notation and integrate this as part of my teaching by way of my own carefully devised teaching programmes and work sheets. Along side rhythm section work (Drums & Bass Guitar). I also include composition, arranging and improvisation work through a fun and dynamic format that allows the learner some flexibility and creativity during their musical development.

Tutoring Experience:

I am C.R.B. Checked. (Full disclosure).

I have been teaching privately for some years now (one-to-one) and have recently qualified at an Associate teacher level in the life long learning sector. I also hold the "Rock School" Diploma as a music educator which is nationally recognised as "the" focused qualification in teaching within this field. Coupled with my practical experience, I feel I am a highly competent tutor. I have also worked at music schools and delivered music workshops as part of my career. I have delivered class lectures to Btec Music Performance students as well as practical performance workshops and composition workshops.

Tutoring Approach:

One-to-One based / Hourly Sessions / from My home or Home visi**Contact Detail Removed**ctronic & Acoustic drum kits utilised / refreshments provided / all resources provided. The environment is very laid back and interaction between myself the tutor and you the learner is paramount. Technology is also utilised as a tool to aid learning and the effectiveness of each learning session when learning from my home.

Through a series of self written modules I incorporate several teaching strategies to create a fun, progressive and beneficial learning experience. We will cover technique, tuning, setting up equipment, music technology, maintenance and drum /cymbal care also. I continually assess progress made both objectively and subjectively regarding the music we play and create. I feel it is important that learning reflects the attributes of the student and is not simply tailored to those who have a natural "read / write" / "theoretical" approach to learning but to those who are active and pragmatical learners also.

I therefore cover, along side reading drum notation, rhythm section work (Drums & Bass Guitar); composition; arranging and improvisation work through a fun and dynamic format that allows the learner some flexibility and creativity during their musical development.

This also includes tackling a students favourite song and utilising on line resources as part of my focus. I use Sibelius 5 (a music arranging programme to score students written work with them for them to keep). Records are kept and a summative report is made out periodically based on regular assessment. All these methods incorporate core skills and the programme of study may be used cross over to G.C.S.E. Music studies as part of practical and theoretical assessment for example.

We will discuss setting up a band, rehearsing, promotion work. You may also be invited along to performances by myself (if suitable) and the possibility of sound checking and learning about "gigging" hands on, all absolutely free of charge! All part of developing the individuals confidence, experience and progress through my own passion for passing on my knowledge.

Publications I have developed as part of my teaching strategy

“Next Step Drumming Course © 2010”

“Introducing Blues and Jazz for drum kit © 2011”

“Introducing Pop and Funk for drum kit © 2011”
