Information About Katie - Paddington teacher

Personal Description:

I've played the flute for over 15 years and the piano as a child and again over the past 5 years, originally learning classical styles through the standard grading system. More recently, I have become completely obsessed by how music works - the rhythms, harmonies, melodies and structures used in all styles from classical to pop and have enjoyed doing more improvisation and informal compositions with other musicians. I hold grade 8 flute and grade 8 music theory.

Tutoring Experience:

I started teaching this year as a way to pass on my knowledge and help enthuse others in the same way my teachers have enthused me!

Tutoring Approach:

I primarily work with beginners and those looking to take their grade 5 music theory exam.

I believe that everyone has the potential to become a great musician, no matter what age, background or previous experience (or lack of) - and perhaps more importantly, everyone has the potential to enjoy every second and become completely addicted along the way! My aim is to demystify the logic behind what you hear – what makes something sound jazzy, dramatic, soulful, delicate, upbeat, etc.?, and to help you speak the musical language in a way that is expressive creative, and lets you say what you want to say.

My experience is that having some understanding of music theory is pretty crucial. But that certainly doesn't have to be sitting regurgitating notes onto a piece of manuscript paper or rope learning Italian performance directions! I hope to help you learn by doing, experimenting as much as humanly possible and letting you hear help guide you every step of the way (your ear is the best teacher there is!). I am also able to help you read and write basic notation (e.g. that required for grade 5 theory).
