Personal Description:

I was fortunate enough to be taught violin from a very young age by some fantastic teachers, who instilled a great love of music in me. I now consider it an absolute joy to pass on this skill to others in a supportive and relaxed, yet challenging way.

As a performing singer, violinist and artist -(**Web Address Removed**), I also feel that I pass on my genuine passion for music, which I feel is such an important part of teaching the wonderful instrument that is the violin. My classical background has greatly influenced the music I write and perform, which these days is more on the folk side of things … I offer violin classes to students of all ages and abilities, from beginner to advanced, adults and children.

Tutoring Experience:

I have followed my passion to teach music and have built up a private teaching schedule of around 16 students. I also have experience teaching violin in several schools in Richmond and Kingston.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching music is my passion. As a violin tutor, I am always looking for what will inspire my students to excel in their own way, finding the right tools and musical direction for each individual. This might mean working through grade pieces (with or without examination) finding styles that particularly ignite the student's imagination, or fostering any composing/improvisational desire/skills that may be there. I believe that this tailored approach is the best way to build the foundation for a joyful and sustainable musical life.

Karen has been teaching me since February 2018 when I first began playing the violin. The violin is the fifth instrument I have learnt and so I have several teachers I am able to compare Karen’s teaching style to! Standout characteristics about Karen’s teaching style and character for me are: - A real focus on you enjoying playing, rather than just learning for sake of it - A step by step approach to technique that builds week and week, growing your confidence and skill without feeling overwhelming. This has really built my confidence - Support in choosing goals to suit you and your dreams i.e. exams, playing in group, style of music - Karen is friendly, warm and with a sense of humour - Endless patience with teaching me to tune my instrument and tips on technique to help me play in my instrument in tune, no easy task the beginning! I love my lessons so much that having moved two hours away to Hampshire, that I come back for them still!

Sarah

Karen has a patient, kind and creative style. My 7-year old daughter absolutely loves 'jamming' with Karen fostering a great love for the violin. The sessions are constructive, easy to follow and fun. I couldn't recommend Karen highly enough!

Adam

Karen is an excellent Violin instructor who really knows how to breakdown and explain what you need to do to improve. I enjoy the way she mixes up the tricky technical tasks with playing fun pieces and duets which give a really nice sense of achievement and progress. I highly recommend Karen to anyone who wants to take up the challenge of learning the Violin.

Andrew

Karen helped our son find enjoyment again in playing the violin. As an intuitive teacher she found ways to connect his 'outside' interests with his music to keep it fresh and interesting for him. She is a talented and committed teacher and we highly recommend her.

Karen

Karen is a great teacher. She tunes into how you learn and helps you accordingly, but also finds a way to teach you correct technique and posture as well. She gives you constructive feedback which for me is huge as some teachers have been discouraging with their criticism. Since Karen has been my teacher my confidence and ability to play has improved immensely. Thank you Karen!

Paul

I’m a latecomer to the violin and Karen has been a great encouragement. Lessons are well focussed and really enjoyable. Her teaching is imaginative and motivational. She deals kindly and constructively with my modest progress. I don’t hesitate in recommending her.

My daughter has been taking lessons from Karen for almost a year now. Karen is truly a very dedicated musician and gives her 100% effort into each and every lesson. She takes special care to ensure that her tutees adopts the best practices right from the beginning, very much as their second nature, and provides constructive feedback for continuous improvement.

Karen has been teaching my daughter for over a year now. She is an inspiring and thoughtful teacher who transmits her love for music and the violin. Karen creates a friendly, calm and stress free environment where a child is allowed to blossom. Since my daughter started having lessons with Karen, she has progressed and improved steadily.

Jay

I have known Karen for few months now as my daughter’s Violin teacher. It’s been only few months and my daughter has learned a lot from Karen and Karen has been key to my daughter’s confidence in playing violin and also appear for an exam for the first time. I find Karen very approachable, accommodating, kind and welcoming person. Karen has a very interesting teaching booth in a lovely spot by the Thames and makes drop and pick up a lovely experience which otherwise would seem like a chore. I am glad I found Karen as my violin teacher for my daughter and my daughter is very comfortable and happy to learn from her.
