Personal Description:

I have studied the violin since the age of six and have attended Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for the past five years, gaining an Undergraduate Degree in violin performance. Subsequently, I have have completed the first year of my Masters degree in the same field. During my time at the Conservatoire I studied under the senior violin tutor Nathaniel Vallois. As part of my degree I have been a member of various chamber music groups, taken part in numerous orchestral projects and performed solo recitals. Alongside this, academic modules have complemented my musical learning.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience of teaching privately all age ranges from child to adult learner and am able to identify and cater to different interests and abilities right from beginner to grade 8 standard. I have also helped out in projects and youth orchestras related to my local area, guiding and helping to support the young and less experienced among the students in order to boost their confidence in this field.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a strongly encouraging individual who believes in the importance of boosting a student’s confidence in order that they can achieve their best in an inclusive and non-discriminatory environment. In terms of choosing repertoire for a student, I look for the specific areas of learning a student needs to work the most on- such as intonation or bowing- and base accordingly to this. I usually use the ABRSM, Suzuki and the Young Violinist's Repertoire series, however this varies according to the students needs and I generally complement graded pieces with other contrasting repertoire for variation. I believe it is important that the student learns to enjoy what they are doing rather than perceiving learning an instrument as work, in this fashion I try to encourage the independent learning of the student. I firmly believe in providing a well-rounded education and will encourage students to listen to music and do research outside of lesson to complement their learning. I also encourage my students to self-evaluate through questioning both the positives and areas for development in their playing. It is very important for me also to build a rapport with the student and to address them in an age-appropriate way. Establishing a firm basic technique enables students to have the tools they require to make progress and enjoy music. This will be built on throughout. Most of all, I wish to impart the knowledge that I have gained, and hope to give enjoyment to the students I teach.
