Personal Description:
Josh’s relationship with music started in the family house, with his father being a professional musician and his mother a lover of art and working in the music industry.
Surrounded by music and the drums , Josh then at age 3 stated committing himself to the instrument and piano soon followed. His passion only flourished and so he started performing with bands and projects playing all around Essex and London from 8 years old.
Jazz became the source of creativity and sought inspiration from musicians such as Max Roach, ‘Philly’ Joe, Elvin Jones, Tony Willams, Jack DeJohnette, and Clifford Jarvis,
and modern contemporaries such as Jonathan Blake, Billy Drummond, Kenny Washington and Eric Harland.
Josh first performed in Ronnie Scott’s aged 15 with a Ronnie Scott’s Big Band project. Since then, he has increasingly found inspiration in the streets of London. He has since had the opportunity to work with inspirational players, such as Simon Spillett, The Andrew Linham Jazz orchestra, Jakub Klimiuk, Louise Balkwill, Andrea Rinciari, Harry Brunt, Sean Fyfe, Sam Dunn, Huw v Williams, Will James and many more. He has also worked with international artists such as Gregory Hutchinson and Ella Rosa. He has had the chance to support timeless artists such as Kenny Garrett and Roy Ayers. Josh has also had the opportunity to compose for film and game with the composer Dan Ward.
Josh has been incredibly fortunate with a lifetime of guidance and care in regards to his musical journey.
This started with Vangelis, a mentor that Josh attributes to turning himself onto jazz drums and showing the purpose of musical playing and orchestration. In terms of drumming tuition, Josh has collaborated with a plethora of talented musicians, such as Gregory Hutchinson, Rodney Green, Jason Brown, James Maddren, Matt Skelton, Joshua Morrison and Will Glaser. A graduate of London College of Music (2017), Josh is now a prospective post-graduate student of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (Sep 2021) having being awarded a performance scholarship.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught drums privately and in schools for the last 10 years.
Covering beginner to advanced level repertoire, technique, reading and independance.
Tutoring Approach:
I have dedicated my life to the art form of music, and get so much joy seeing other people find
whatever level of success they desire from it. Whether that be learning their first song, transcribing
their first solo, distinction in their first grade, first live gig or getting accepted to their dream music
college. I love to see people's passions ignite, I was very fortunate to have this, and now always try
to offer this care in learning to any student.
I specialise in jazz and am a full time musician, working and writing in the scene. So I can offer
high level tuition, informed technique, repertoire, knowledge and improvisational skill from real
world experience.
Although I specialise in Jazz, I make sure all information is malleable for any interest in music my
students have, as I want this to be their journey. Also all my teaching will build their musicianship,
making students capable of music Grades, ensemble performances, Conservatoire junior school
auditions and Undergrad standard. I have had students from various backgrounds attend music
college or further their music study. I personally feel it is our duty to make music and art accessible
to all, and continue passing on its heritage and importance through the next wave of budding
young musicians.
