Personal Description:
Experienced and versatile cello teacher, Josh offers tailored lessons to students of all ages and abilities—from absolute beginners to aspiring professionals. Based in North London, he teaches both in person and online, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for all.
A graduate with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music, Josh studied under Professor Jo Cole for his Master’s degree. Prior to this, he earned a First Class Honours Bachelor of Music from the Royal Northern College of Music, where he was taught by Professor Hannah Roberts. His musical training began at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music.
Josh is an accomplished professional cellist with a deep passion for orchestral playing. He performs regularly with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as part of their 2024/25 Career Accelerator Scheme, and is Principal Cellist of Paraorchestra—a pioneering ensemble breaking boundaries and redefining the orchestral experience.
As an active chamber musician, Josh is the founder of the award-winning Bauhaus Trio and a core member of the Petford Ensemble, performing across the UK and Europe. In 2022, he returned to Chetham’s with the Riedl Quartet to lead a coaching and side-by-side performance project with middle school students.
Josh’s versatility extends beyond the concert hall. He performs on electric cello and keyboard with the Forever Elton tribute band, appears on film and **Contact Detail Removed**vision soundtracks as a session musician, and regularly tours with Fordante—an Arts Council England-funded ensemble blending classical music with film scores.
With a commitment to high-quality teaching, a broad skill set, and a genuine love of performance, Josh brings energy, insight, and inspiration to every lesson.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a range of teaching experience working with students of different ages and abilities, from young beginners to advanced adult learners. Alongside my performing career, I have led individual cello lessons and small ensemble coaching, drawing on both classical training and extensive professional experience.
As a cellist, I’ve performed with leading UK ensembles including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (as part of their Career Accelerator Scheme), and as Principal Cellist with Paraorchestra. I bring this depth of experience into my teaching—offering not only technical guidance but also insight into real-world performance practices, ensemble playing, and musical expression.
I’ve also worked in educational and outreach contexts, and I’m passionate about making music learning inclusive, encouraging, and fulfilling for each student.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is student-led, warm, and supportive—built around each individual’s goals, interests, and learning style. Whether you're working towards exams, building confidence in orchestral or chamber music settings, or playing for your own enjoyment, lessons will be tailored to help you thrive.
I aim to nurture both strong technique and musical curiosity, combining practical skills (like bowing, posture, and tone production) with creativity and interpretation. I’m equally happy teaching by ear or with notation, and can support students preparing for ABRSM/Trinity exams or auditions.
With professional experience across both classical and contemporary settings, I love helping students develop their unique voice as musicians—whatever stage they’re at.
