Personal Description:

I`ve been passionate about playing the piano ever since my very first lesson at the age of 11. I want my pupils to share my enthusiasm for the instrument. I also want them to develop of greater appreciation of music in general as a result of their keyboard studies, which will enrich their lives as it has done mine.
At university I read European History, and perhaps because of this I`m very aware of music in its wider historical, social and cultural context.
I`ve also played the organ in church for most kinds of service.

Tutoring Experience:

I`ve taught the piano for 27 years. My pupils have varied in age from 6 to 80--so it`s never to late to learn! My exam pass rates are excellent, with many pupils achieving merits and distinctions, or coming top of their classes in local music festivals. In my career I`ve also taught many adults who have regarded playing the piano as a welcome respite from a stressful job. Some have been absolute beginners, other "returnees" who have decided to resume playing after a lapse of several years.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make each lesson enjoyable… I always first discuss with new pupils what they would like to achieve from their lessons. For example, some adults wish to do play purely for pleasure whereas others relish the challenge of having an object to work for in the form of an exam, which can prove a real spur to progress. Every pupil is different and I always strive to cater for their individual needs. Previous pupils have praised me for being very patient! My teaching is classically orientated which I believe provides a sound technical and musical foundation--though that`s not to say I don`t also enjoy exploring the lighter repertoire!
