Personal Description:
I read Music at Oxford University and then studied at the Guildhall School of Music as a post-graduate. I played with ensembles as diverse as The Academy of Ancient Music and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, but have spent much of my career working in education as a teacher of both instrumental and academic music. My arrangements for brass have been played worldwide by ensembles including the horns of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, while others appear on the main instrumental examination syllabuses. My book, "The Early Horn" is published by CUP, and my reconstructions and editions have been played by many of the world's leading horn players. I have Enhanced DBS clearance and am the father of two children who both enjoy their music hugely!
Tutoring Experience:
I have 30 years' experience as a teacher of both instrumental and academic music, and former pupils have gone on to music colleges, universities and specialist music schools. I have considerable experience with beginners and younger students, but I have also taught adults successfully. I am a very experienced examiner for a leading instrumental examination board and also examine academic music for both Edexcel and the International Baccalaureate.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching is underpinned by a rigorous understanding of both musical and technical principles and while I encourage my students to aim high, I believe strongly that music is fun and is there for all to enjoy!
