Personal Description:

Hi my name is James and I am an experienced music production tutor and music tech and computer maintenance specialist. I have been involved with music tech and production for over 20 years and on occassion professionaly but mostly as an enthusiast and artist.

I provide one-to-one tuition in computer music and recording which includes anything from using a DAW, plugins and music tech hardware to recording techniques, mixing and much more! I also provide technical setup, advice, upgrades and maintence services for home music studios of any size whether that be a desk in a study, a dedicated room or a living room table! The term home studio is pretty loose.

Tutoring Experience:

I have worked in a varitey of music tech teaching roles, and gained general teaching experience working abroad as an English Language Teacher. I have also been involved in youth work projects focused on music tech workshops. My experience has led me to have worked with a diverse range of students of all ages and abilities. Now I teach privately.

Tutoring Approach:

Update: Due to the current circumstances I am now offering only online tuition over video chat until further notice. This includes, video, audio, screen sharing and file sharing. I am treating studio setup and maintenece on a case by case basis, so please get in touch if this is something you need. I am still building custom music PCs for clients.

My approach is tailored to each individual depending on their needs, and taking into account their setup and musical style. If you are new to music production, I can offer extensive advice as to what setup to start out with that will best suit your music goals.

I teach the core music production and technology principles that can be applied to any situation, style and setup. However, I let this be led by what the student wants to achieve, so there is not set curriculum.

Topics I cover are: using a DAW, recording live instruments, audio editing, MIDI and virtual instruments, effects and mixing to sound design and synthesis, and much more.

I also provide technical setup, advice, upgrades and maintence services for home music studios, whether big or small.

DAWS I teach: Reaper, Ableton Live, Reason, Renoise, Bitwig Studio

Don't worry if your DAW is not listed here, I can assist with any setup and it's likely I have had experience with it in the past. These include: Logic, Pro Tools and Cubase. Note: In the event I have enough students for a particular DAW I will usually get my own copy.

Minimum lesson time is 60 minutes.
