Personal Description:

I am a music therapist as well as a piano teacher and singer and enjoy composing music. My training as a music therapist has influenced the way I teach piano. I like most styles of music and love to sit down at the piano and see what comes out. It's a great place to express oneself! Singing is something I also love and some of my pupils learn songs and knowledge of their voice during lessons if they are interested. I have some experience of performing.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught a lot of children over the years and helped them through exams. My background in music therapy has also meant becoming more accessible as a teacher to young people with additional needs and I have taught children on the spectrum and helped them learn music reading skills. My first job was in primary school teaching. Some learners, particularly adults are happy not to be taking exams (!) and I enjoy helping people access the music they want to play. I teach online or travel to people's houses.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach the reading of music notation and I also encourage learners to experience playing by ear and making up bits and pieces for themselves as I think this is a great way in to "getting on the inside" of the music and gives a different experience of reading notes from the stave. Some learners like to get started with simple chords by ear so they can start playing songs they like. I am good at motivating learners and most people progress well as I encourage people to play things they like. Some learners like to try out learners to new styles of music, such as Jazz if they have focussed mainly on classical for example. I like the pieces in ABRSM books, as they always provide a really varied diet. I find most learners are visual or aural or kinaesthetic in style or a combination and it's important to respect and understand how each individual learns. My training as a music therapist comes in handy here.
