Personal Description:

My training was at the Royal Manchester College of Music where I studied with Endre Wolf and later had lessons in London with the celebrated teacher Kato Havas. As soloist I have given many recitals including the Wigmore Hall series and performed concertos with orchestras throughout the UK plus BBC broadcasts with the West Riding String Quartet. I live in Weddington (Nuneaton) and travel to Oxford to teach as as well as seeing my students locally.
I have previously been a full time violinist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Leader of the West Riding String Quartet.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught both privately and been employed as upper strings teacher for the Leeds Music Service when I was first violinist in the West Riding String Quartet teaching students at the University of Leeds, and Berkshire Maestros teaching violin and viola to students at all ages and levels. My students usually achieve a merit or distinction in ABRSM grade exams and some have gone on to specialist music schools including Chethams and music colleges to study for a career in music. I also teach advanced students post Grade 8 and specialize in technical issues such as vibrato, advanced bowing technique, and chord playing in the solo works of J S Bach. I also have a number of adults of different ages returning to playing after a long absence.
Congratulations to my students Madeleine and Emilie who recently gained distinctions for their ABRSM Grade 8 violin exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I have resumed home teaching after the end of the Covid lockdown and have been double vaccinated. The first consultation lesson is free with no obligation to continue. My approach for young beginners is to get them playing a simple tune without the initial burden of music reading which is a feature of the Japanese Suzuki method, although I am not a Suzuki teacher. This works well and gives pupils a sense of achievement.
I have a number of smaller size violins which pupils can borrow at no extra cost.
Please don't buy a self assembly violin with bridge down as its a specialist job to assemble and they usually don't work.
For young pupils an hour's lesson may be too long so I can offer a 30 minu**Contact Detail Removed**sson for a pro-rata half hour fee.
Feedback from a parent - . Think she has learned more in her first session than in the year she has been playing at school! Thank you!
Stop Press - Congratulations to Emilie and Alison for success in the ARSM Violin Performance Diploma and to Aadi for a distinction in Grade 1.
