Personal Description:

Trained as a concert pianist (Royal College of Music, London) and active in this way across the UK and abroad, I am the Head of Instrumental Music at the Godolphin School, Salisbury. I hold a permanent position as Teacher of Musicianship and Piano at Junior Trinity College of Music, London (Saturdays), and my thriving teaching practice continues to grow. I like to be kept busy!

Tutoring Experience:

My teaching career is extremely busy. I've taught for several years, and, at Godolphin, I oversee all the instrumental and vocal teaching taking place in the school (a team of 20 visiting staff). I teach piano, academic music at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level, theory and aural, and coach chamber music, as well as being the resident accompanist.

At Junior Trinity, I take classes of 11-18 year-olds in Musicianship training, as well as individual piano lessons.

I have a thriving teaching practice, and new students are always very welcome to join my studio! I've been a private piano tutor for the greater part of a decade. In this time, I've successfully helped students become musicians with greater pianistic capacity, and an enriched personal understanding of their art.

Student exam successes have been considerable: in the academic year 2016-17, 80% of the numerous exam entries across ABRSM, Trinity College and LCM syllabuses attained Distinctions: perhaps the most noteworthy is a young student who gained 92% in her ATCL in Performance.

Tutoring Approach:

Making music is one of the greatest, most rewarding things you can do for yourself - and others! It takes commitment and focus, and brings untold benefits to one's wellbeing, ability to concentrate, and, when playing with others, making new friends and connections.

Hard work is of course essential, but the fun had along the way counts for just as much. I bring a wealth of performing experience and scholarship to every lesson I teach, and aim to keep the experience light-hearted, warm, and focussed. Every lesson I teach includes aspects of technique as linked to musical expression, theoretical understanding, and history. Promoting the skills of improvisation and sight-read isn't unimportant either.

I believe it is paramount that all musicians allow themselves the opportunity to perform: be this in a prestigious venue, or to your friends and family in your living room, it's so important to share the special thing you do with others. I encourage every one of my students to do this, as much as they can.

I teach my private students at the Godolphin School from 16:15 on weekdays. Students usually learn on excellent Boston or Yamaha uprights: there are occasional opportunities to play on the schools' excellent Yamaha grands.
